- Monday 4 February -

4 February is World Cancer Day.

As BIG is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, there’s no better time than now to spread our message of hope and progress. To mark this occasion, we have produced a short, animated video.

We are “BIG against breast cancer” and we want to make a BIG point:
If you were a woman 20 years ago, diagnosed with breast cancer, there were few treatment options and a low survival rate. Today, we know much more about breast cancer and we can offer more individualised treatments. Thanks to your support and to global collaboration, we have strengthened our research efforts to find more solutions. But we have to press the point about tomorrow.

We want the next generation to reap the fruits of our research and have even more hope in beating breast cancer.

Breast cancer incidence
According to recent figures (source: Globocan 2018), by end of 2018, approximately 2.1 million people, including twenty-one thousand men (1%), were estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer. With no fewer than 627,000 deaths (72 deaths/hour) worldwide, it is the cancer that causes the most deaths in absolute terms.

Breast cancer incidence rates are the highest in the so-called developed regions (Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America), but the world record is held by Belgium with 188 cases per 100,000 women.

In women, these rates far exceed those for other cancers in both developed and developing countries, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women: 24.2 %, or about 1 in 4 of all new cancer cases in women worldwide.

Fortunately, mortality rates are falling thanks to the research conducted to date. Women diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago had very few treatment options and a low survival rate. But today, patients have access to more individualised treatments.

BIG is working together towards one goal: to cure breast cancer! Our ambition is to see the next generation reaping the fruits of its research to beat breast cancer.

Join us in spreading hope and in the search for cures.

You can make a difference too by supporting an academic study.
Donate and support research

Where does the money go? 94,8% is directly invested back into BIG’s own research.

Donations over €40 per year are tax deductible for Belgian residents. With this tax savings, a gift of €100 costs you only €60.

BIG is known in the scientific community as the Breast International Group
Research is essential to help us better understand breast cancer. BIG is an international not-for-profit organisation for academic breast cancer research groups from around the world. Its mission is to facilitate and accelerate breast cancer research internationally.

Linked to over 3,000 hospitals and 10,000 breast cancer experts through 59 research groups, BIG is the largest international network (over 50 countries across 6 continents) dedicated solely to breast cancer. Since 1999, more than 95,000 patients have participated in BIG’s clinical trials.
